Hip Hop Mike was a young kid from Queens who loved listening to Hip Hop mixtapes – now he’s a DJ at New York’s biggest radio station,Hot 97, learning under legends like Peter Rosenberg, Ebro Darden & Pio. Mike has interviewed and broken a number of artists including Smooky Margielaa, Aron Ray, Rich The Kid, Fatboy SSE and many more.
Looking up to artists like Nas, 50 Cent, Biggie, Tupac, Eminem & Mobb Deep, his knowledge for music allows the young New York DJ to provide a diverse catalogue of hits for the thousands of Hot 97 listeners he caters to every week.
Aside from being an on air personality, Hip Hop Mike, also manages musical artist, Live Like Davis & has participated in SXSW for many years now. Having to learn the ropes a little from mentor Peter Rosenberg he eventually gained enough insight to run his own show once a year during SWSW. Artists like Burnsev, Baby Goth, and Ayleks graced the stage at this year’s “Hip-Hop House Party”. Mike also curates the “Trap Rap 2019” Spotify playlist which currently has 10 thousand followers.
To end the interview I asked some questions about his craziest interviews, his top 3 in the game right now and to go into a little detail about SXSW for people who’ve never been:
What’s one for the craziest interviews you ever had?
“Definitely shoreline mafia” he says laughing.
“They were so dope to interview they just didn’t have a lot of energy towards the end. I would also say Aron Ray & A. Chal.” He continues. “They had some pretty crazy stories”
Being a DJ almost every night who would you say is your top 3 in the game right now?
“It’s hard to stay top 3 but I could definitely name a few: Drake, Jay Z, Kanye, Meek, Cardi B & Migos”
“Nipsey Hussle is also someone I see at the top of the game also, the news of his passing is very unfortunate & I send prayers out to his family. Being from New York it wasn’t always easy. A lot of the success i have comes from days and nights of hard work and i definitely learned a lot watching Nipsey”
What exactly is SXSW for people who haven’t been yet ?
“Basically the whole city of Austin shuts down. Every club is turned into a venue where artists can get booked & perform.”
Mike has a long track record in New York and globally. From Lil Tjay to Fatboy SSE, Hip Hop Mike has had his ears to the streets for years and continues to impress as the days and weeks go by. Recovering from a hectic Summer Jam Festival, Mike looks to control the tempo for these next few months and continue to do what he does best!
