Atlanta Georgia’s very own Matt Citron was one of the many artists to bless the stage at HOT 97’s Whos Next showcase at the legendary SOB’s the other night. However, of the many acts which included Phresher and appearances from HOT 97 heavy weights such as DJ Drewski and Shani Kulture, Matts appearance peaked my interest the most. The gifted rapper and singer
The gifted rapper and singer who is known for his passionate, East Coast-meets-Deep South hip-hop sound, really set the stage on fire even while having a few technical difficulties with the sound. During his set, he performed some tracks off his album Final Moments Forever.
Though what made his performance different from others was his incredible ability to freestyle using words given to him by the crowd. After Matt’s performance I took some time out to talk to the rising star, to get an idea of where his passion stemmed from, he mentioned that he was inspired by listening to artist like Ludacris, OutKast, and Dipset, as well as hanging out with friends where he was able to begin writing and freestyling his own raps, casually developing his style. Matt also mentioned how after high school, he was given a basketball scholarship which brought him to South Carolina.
However, he wished to get closer to the New York hip-hop scene, deciding to transfer to Adelphi University on Long Island. Where he then balanced school and basketball with trips into the city to really chase his passion for music. I was highly impressed by his drive and love for his craft paired with impeccable stage presence. It all makes him a definite contender in today’s hip hop and music scene.
