Following the tone of the hundreds of families being held in detention centers across the nation, A$AP Rocky is no exception to the unjust.
Rakim Mayers, better known by his stage name ASAP Rocky, was detained last week following the now viral incident in Stockholm. According to Agence France-Presse (AFP), Sweden’s Supreme Court rejected Rocky’s appeal for release from custody on July 8th. The denial comes three days after a Swedish district court ordered that Rocky be held in custody while prosecutors investigate the fight that took place. The court claimed Rocky is a flight risk, which ultimately resulted in the Supreme Court rejecting his appeal for release.
His attorney, Henrik Olsson Lilja has challenged the court arguing they have no justification for their ‘flight risk’ argument. Rocky will remain in custody for 2 weeks until the investigation is complete. His delayed release will not only impact his tour and career as he has already had to cancel shows in Norway, Poland, Ireland and the UK, but has also impacted ASAP himself since his conditions have been reported as ‘inhumane’.
ASAP Ferg has been updating fans on the situation and took to instagram last week to let everyone know what is going on. He wrote “He’s in Sweden locked up in solitary confinement with no visit or phone call privileges. They are trying to keep him there for 2 weeks and if convicted he will be looking at 6 years just for defending himself in a fight. He was no way in form the aggressor in this ordeal. Pray for justice #freeflacko”.
Other artists like Miguel, Schoolboy Q, Travis Scott, Lil Yachty and the A$AP Mob Family have taken to social media to bring awareness to this situation and the petition for his release (Change.org) The petition for his release has been signed by well over 400,000 supporters.
