For those who don’t know who you are, who is Ben Luciano?
I’m an independent musician who is mainly known for playing guitar but I’m also very involved in my community. I was named the “Leader of the Youth in Fresno”. Helping others is something I enjoy the most. Especially when it’s through music. I don’t sing. My guitar does. I express myself through music to create my art.
Where were you born and raised?
I was born and raised in Fresno, California.
How old are you?
20 years young.
What impacted you or inspired you to want to do music & guitar?
Gene Simmons of KISS was the reason why I got into music because he just seemed cool. People respected him. He’s a rockstar and a very successful business man. But, Carlos Santana and Slash gave me courage to pursue music as an independent guitarist.
When did you discover your love for music?
Growing up, I was brought up with a wide range of music. I had people in my life that listened to R&B, Metal, Swing, Country, Alternative Rock, etc. Music has always been a part of my life.
How would you describe your daily life?
I have to keep myself busy regardless if I’m tired or not. I try to take advantage of the time I have every day. Whether if it’s spending time with family, friends, or going out of town.
What were the struggles you faced?
I started getting into the music business at a young age. From having people take advantage of my talent to people always telling me I was too young to do something. I always found a way to overcome those challenges not only to get myself out there more, but to become smarter.
Is playing guitar like an escape from the real world?
Playing guitar always gave me a way to express myself. Listening to music overall as a matter of fact. I’ve always felt that true art is created from the pain and turmoil an individual goes through. Everyone has their own escape. Mine is music.
What was your lowest point in your life?
I can’t name a specific time but all the low points I went through in life made me who I am today and I’m proud that I got through them all because some have been very rough.
What motivates you to keep going?
The people around me. Especially my mom. She always pushed me to become a better version of myself and made sure I stayed focused. I was always told “If you hang with sh*t, you’ll go down with sh*t”. It couldn’t be more true. I always hang around people who are goal oriented and driven to succeed with what they want for themselves. Also those who support me. Support is everything to me.
If you knew anyone who wanted to follow their heart and dreams but are afraid of something new coming in their life what would you say?
Don’t be afraid. Others may not see your goals the same but if you are passionate about it, chase it even when you reach new challenges. It’s always best to challenge yourself. Once you do, you’ll know if you really want it. Overcome all the obstacles thrown at you. And if someone tries to shut your dreams down, don’t stop. Prove them wrong. You can do anything you put your mind to. The saddest thing in life is wasted talent.
Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
I want to major in business marketing. Mainly for music to work with labels. I like competition and finding news ways to do things that’ll get others involved.
I’ve been in Fresno before and since your a local by heart what is your favorite food place to go to?
Dog House Grill has always been my go to spot.
Who have you worked with?
Kehlani, Baeza, Prince Sole, Kenneth Paige etc. The list goes on. I’ve learned something from each artist I’ve worked with and met.
If you could collab with anyone who would it be?
Man, it would probably be Carlos Santana. Not only would I want to do music with him but I’d also want to genuinely sit down and have a conversation with him about the challenges he had to face while breaking into the mainstream as a hispanic guitarist.
What’s the best piece of advice you ever been given?
I’ve always had advice thrown at me. Before I got into music I was a big fan of comedian Jo Koy. After one of his shows, my mom asked him what advice could he give me about being on stage. He replied, “Just go out there and show them what you got. Don’t be afraid to share your talent”.
Whats the meanest critic you have received in your career?
I believe that I am my meanest critic. I am very hard on myself. Others say I’m a perfectionist. That’s why I don’t really post videos of myself playing guitar on social media. Most of the time I think I’m not good enough even though I receive some of the best comments especially from people I don’t know at all.
Who’s the most played artist on your phone right now?
My most played artist has to be Frank Sinatra. I’ve always admired how effortlessly he sang. It’s beautiful. I wish I could do the same. Haha
Who’s your favorite person in your life?
My mom. I have a lot of great people in my life that I value but my mom has supported me since the day I was born. I don’t think I’d be who I am today if it wasn’t for her. I am very thankful for my mom.
Is there any song you are feeling that you think people should know about?
Stranded by Flight Facilities has to be one of my favorite songs. It’s so great. Not sure if a lot of people know of it but it’s definitely a beautiful piece of art. I can go on and on about how amazing the instrumentation is. The amount of soul put into a simple record is honestly amazing.
Are we expecting anything new soon?
Baeza and I dropped some new music. 2 songs in January and another one in February. They’ve been in the vault since last year. I have a lot of music with different artists that are unreleased as well. I’ve been working on a few things.
Okay lets have a bit of fun what’s your favorite kind of Oreo?
Oreos aren’t my first pick but double stuffed. I do love cookies and cream though!
If you’re hungry what is your go to snack?
My go to snacks are the granola bars from Dutch Bros. I have a friend that works there and she had me try one not too long ago. Probably the best things on earth at the moment!
Favorite song of all time?
I actually have a Spotify playlist of some of my all time favorite songs. My favorite one is probably “Fly Me To The Moon” by Frank Sinatra. Something about it makes me happy. I sing along to it all the time. It’s also crazy that it was one of Lil Peep’s favorite songs. That’s tight to me. I would’ve never thought it would be his favorite song. Check it out RIGHT HERE!
