“Nothing sets a great artist apart from the rest more than being able to bring their music to life in a live setting,” says co-founder of The FADER, Jon Cohen. FADER FORT has been our platform to bring great FADER content to life and allow our audience to experience so many incredible artists for the first time. The FADER FORT has created many special moments across many genres in an intimate setting that has allowed artists to establish who they are unlike any festival in the country.”

Including introductions from Damon Albarn (Blur, Gorillaz) and Sean “Diddy” Combs, FADER FORT Setting The Stage is the first release from FADER Books, a new publishing house from The FADER. The 250-page bookcaptures the unique ethos of FADER FORT, documenting the event’s cultural significance and the crucial role it plays in music discovery and collaboration — remaining a widely respected fixture in the ever-changing nature of the music industry throughout the years. Combs says in the intro, “It’s something that’s cultural. You wanna be a part of it. You better be a part of it. It goes on your show bucket list. I did the FADER FORT.”

FADER FORT, which originated in an Austin hotel room as a place for artists to let loose between performances during annual music festival South by Southwest, quickly grew to become one of the largest showcases at the festival. “FADER FORT originated from a pure passion that was all about creating amazing moments in live performances,” says Co-Founder of The FADER Rob Stone. “Over time we realized these moments are becoming our legacy and our contribution to culture. This book documents those rare moments that made it what it is today.”

To date, FADER FORT has featured over 900 performances from some of the biggest mainstream and underground artists of all genres across multiple days of programming, bringing different worlds of music together and creating a special, inclusive home for everyone.

“We’re releasing FADER FORT Setting The Stage now, because we’ve seen this transition of live music becoming one of the most important outlets in the music industry,” says The FADER’s President and Publisher, Andy Cohn. “Throughout the 18 years of The FADER’s history, we’ve seen this flip. We’ve been at the center of major breakthroughs in many artists’ careers. FADER FORT has become a way to celebrate these artists, and champion the new ones we’re supporting in a way that is authentic, and special for everyone involved.”

With compelling photographs from critically acclaimed photographers of rare behind-the-scenes moments and portraits with artists including Kanye West, Lou Reed, Miley Cyrus, and Erykah Badu, as well as early, intimate performances from now icons like Amy Winehouse, Kendrick Lamar, and The Killers, FADER FORT Setting The Stage is a necessary physical manifestation of unforgettable FADER FORT moments and an awe-inspiring visual keepsake for true music fans of our generation.

“Backstage at FADER FORT you can feel the connection the artists have to FORT and what it’s meant to them,” says photographer Jesse Lirola. “It’s this feeling which flows from handshake to to headnod or embrace as artists greet one another, friends from The FADER, and industry people alike. Those moments are exactly what you’re seeing in this book, and that’s why I returned year after year to document that feeling which the FORT has backstage and on stage.”
