Long live boom-bap!

By: Chrissy Dru

If you think “boom-bap” is gone, then I suggest you get familiar with producer/artist Lars Viola. The Brooklyn based artist recently released his cleverly titled EP- “Cooking”. With a style reminiscent of a few legendary hip-hop producers like Statik Selektah, Alchemist, and even the late great J. Dilla, Viola chops up samples like an iron chef to create a fresh sound that pays homage to the Golden Era of hip-hop. The skilled beatmaker calls it “a hodgepodge of different samples [he] handpicked”, showcasing not only his aptitude for production but an ear for good music.  “Cooking” is like a recipe and each track is another wonderful ingredient contributing to a masterful dish. Just like a well-prepared meal, this project is to be savored and enjoyed in a setting that only enhances the sonic experience it sends you on. We’re excited to see what Lars Viola “cooks” up next!
