August 3rd, 1999. That’s the day Roc-a-fella artist Memphis Bleek dropped his debut album Coming of Age. This was his first of 3 consecutive albums to sell 500,000 units, making it a certified Gold album.
This album also is responsible for his biggest hit, the song “Memphis Bleek Is…”. He also had some heavy producers on here such as Swizz Beatz, Irv Gotti, and even Buckwild.
This was just the start of what would be a great but underrated career for Bleek as he would see some success but it never seemed to be enough for the public. Jay-Z even once dubbed him as the next “Jay-Z”, which many people felt like that big of a cosign hurt his career more than it helped. Nonetheless, he still has had a solid rap career and he’s working on another album that has yet to get a release date. I would be interested to hear what Memphis Bleek sounds like in 2017.
