OutKast is easily one of the best groups not just in rap, but in music period.  They’ve influenced a whole generation of musicians that influenced the musicians today.  14 years ago today, OutKast burst on the music scene with their debut album Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik.

Big Boi and Andre 3000 became friends two years before the albums release.  They worked with a production team and eventually got signed to LaFace Records where they released their debut effort.  With an emphasis on east coast rap, this was a completely different sound.  With live instrumentation and influences from funk and soul music, it gave the album the edge it needed to stick out.  Being different was something they’ve prided themselves on, as evidence in the later years of their career.

The album peaked at #20 on Billboard 200 and is now a certified platinum album.  This was the beginning of southern rap being a credible region of the rap game.  This was also the beginning of the multitude of rappers coming out of Atlanta.

This is personally my second favorite OutKast album after of course Speakerboxxx/TheLoveBelow.  The soul and funk vibe is what makes it a very enjoyable album.

Happy 14th Birthday to OutKast’s debut, Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik.
