It was just last week that Hot 97 presented the October chapter of their monthly showcase series of Who’s Next with host Shani Kulture. Not only did Hot 97 and Shani select an impressive lineup of artists to perform – all bringing their own flare, they also had a few big names in the room like Kid Ink, Waka Flocka, Hot 97 favorite Live Like Davis and Los.

First to hit the stage was Na Boogz. Bringing a unique style to the “Who’s Next” stage from the jewels he was wearing to his overall performance. At the start, he brought high energy and a very clear crowd presence . A Bronx, NY representative, Na Boogz is most known for his hit single “Step Off” which currently has 38 thousand plays on soundcloud alone. Bringing out quite a crowd, he also put on a show for his fans when he brought his crew on stage to perform with him.

Devvon Terrell was the next artist up. From the looks of the crowd participating, his fan base (the weirdos as he calls them) came out in full force to support and celebrate him as one of the selected acts of this months Who’s Next. Out of all the performers, he was the clear vocalist, delivering some soulful tracks that the crowd really enjoyed. Coming out of Brooklyn, New York, Terrell expressed coming from ‘a place that some people see as hard’ but is still able to connect many different kinds of folks through his music.  Engagement through and through, it wasn’t until the very last song of his performance that a small ovation was induced, as he shouted out his ex who was in the crowd.  You can check out Devvon Terrell’s brand new project “Weird Nights” on soundcloud.

Chaz French was very impressive when he hit the SOB stage. Out of every artist to perform, he was the clear lyricist. With his performance tracks  “Way Out” and “Squad” being featured in Madden 18′, his music has an abstract Chance The Rapper type of feel to it that the audience was really feeling. His storytelling and feel-good records set him apart. One of the two artist of the night to come dressed in his own apparel, next to Nexxt Thursday who was seen sporting an icy double x chain. His project True Colors is out now, dropped a few months ago and can be streamed on his soundcloud platform.  Go check him out.

And, the clear favorite of the night, Nexx Thursday closed the show. Announcing before putting on his show that he was dedicating his performance to his mother whom had passed away, as she always wanted to see him perform. The first song was an ode to the ladies, many in the audience knew not only this song but his whole set word for word. The next track he performed was a tropical dance hall type that the fans were really into. Saving the best song for last, he performed his hit song “Sway” featuring Quavo and Lil Yachty which currently sits comfortably at 8 million plays on soundcloud alone.

Hot 97 and Shani Kulture brought light to some very talented and promising artists that we will soon start hearing more and more about on our status-fere, but we can’t forget the big names who graced us with their presence either. When word broke that some high profile names were in the crowd many people cheered for a performance or just some words for the fans in attendance, and Atlanta rapper Waka Flocka Flame gladly stepped up, expressing how important events like “Who’s Next” are for the culture. Most of the artists to perform were from the New York area so he also shared his satisfaction at the state of the New York sound today, saying, “I’m glad to see New York find their way through Hip-Hop sounding different. Everyone else sounds the same these days, it’s good to see New York stand out and be different.”

“Who’s Next” is hosted by SOB’s every month, you can purchase tickets at the Hot 97 website for the next one in a few weeks.
