Empire star Jussie Smollett has found himself in some hot water following the alleged false claim reports.
According to CNN, the actor has been indicted on 16 felony counts by a County grand jury for disorderly conduct. In January, the actor claimed he was brutally attacked in Chicago that led to a noose being wrapped around his neck and chemicals thrown on him. The news quickly made headlines — resulting to the investigation of a possible hate crime by Chicago Police Department.
Smollett’s case has been treated as a high profile case due to it’s public scrutiny. In mid-February, police detained two brothers who were “persons of interest,” authorities believed the men were paid to help Smollett stage his attack. The judge granted Smollett a bail of 100,000 — Smollett, however, paid a 10,000 bond with the removal of his passport.
In recent statement, Smollett’s attorney spoke on the actors behalf:
“Like any other citizen, Mr. Smollett enjoys the presumption of innocence, particularly when there has been an investigation like this one where information, both true and false, has been repeatedly leaked. Given these circumstances, we intend to conduct a thorough investigation and to mount an aggressive defense.”
CNN also reports the producers of Empire has written out Smollett’s character, Jamal, from the remaining two episodes of the season. No word on whether Smollett will reprise his role on the show.
