I have had so many memories; from my breakthrough projects with Gucci to more recent ones with Lecrae and Boosie, It’s hard to pin point one exact memory in which stood out to me. I enjoy and still enjoy this process, it keeps me alive.
Zaytoven, More Than Music
Zaytoven told me on a breezy Wednesday afternoon in a very happy manner. Known for being one of the pioneers in modern musical production, Zaytoven revolutionized the game. He is one of the first producers to step outside of music and really become an overall brand. Normally, musicians have step into other realms of television, modeling, and other ventures; however, along with other producers such as Calvin Harris and Metro Boomin, Zay has made power plays beyond music.
Being curious and a long time fan, I always wondered what what his point of view with his humble beginning with fellow Atlanta icon Gucci Mane. Settling in the Atlanta area, he got a job as a barber to help finance his personal studio. While attending barber school, one of his classmates introduced Zaytoven to Gucci Mane; the rest is history.
“Boy, I’ll tell you, when me and Gucci first started, his work ethic made me go so much harder,” Zay said with passion. “Literally, bright and early in the morning, Gucci would hit my phone asking if we were hitting the studio. That passion fueled mines even higher and the rest is history.”
Ciroc And Zay, A Match Made In Heaven
One recent venture for the producer was tapping into the advertising realm commercial with Saweetie for Circoc. “Saweetie is like family to me so the on screen connection we shared making this commercial was natural. When Diddy gave me a call asking for me to be in it, I had to do it, it was the right thing to do,” he said.
“To answer you question of producers being entrepreneurs, I’ll use this story as a lesson for all producers, doing things like photo shoots, commercials, movies, community service, and more show your versatility; thus making your more relatable to different crowds which build your fan base.”
Awarded In Many Ways
Zay, being one of the most well rounded and versatile producers to ever grace music, won big recently by tapping into the gospel/hip hop realm with Lecrae.
Yes, Lecrae and Zaytoven. No, that isn’t a typo, the same Zaytoven who has worked with Gucci Mane, Usher, OJ Da Juiceman, Yung LA, Yung Ralph, The Shop Boyz, Lil Scrappy, Jagged Edge, Gorilla Zoe, Migos, Future, MoneyBagg Yo, Cheif Keef, and more artist in that realm of hip hop, teamed up with Lecrae to make a critically acclaimed gospel project “Let The Trap Say Amen.”
The Gospel Music Association (GMA) awarded the project a high honor in a Dove Award. Left baffled by first hearing the news but then coming to realization that music has the power to tap into multiple sides and reaches of the world; Zaytoven has a simple of yet super effective way of making multiple musical bags and magic occur.
“For me, the key to adjusting to different sounds and flows of musicians is me matching the vibe and the energy of the artist,” he said. “No matter what type of music you make, if it’s well done, it will attract the attention of the world. My production should only heighten the excellence of the artist.”
Bad Azz Zay, Southern Hip Hop At it’s Finest
Another bad Zay recently hopped in was a collaborative tape with Boosie Badazz (Formerly Lil Boosie) titled “Bad Azz Zay.” Composed of thirteen tracks, the duo play off each others strengths like LeBron James and Dwyane Wade did; when they won Championships together for the Miami Heat.
According to Zaytoven, “Boosie and I have that natural chemistry. Our combination of southern roots and musical flare really made this project pop, it has a special place in my catalog. I’m really proud of the job we did.”
Some of my personal favorites off the project are Elevation, Church On Monday, My Soul, and Where You From. Brash instrumentals, intricate trap drums, and Boosie’s signature flow makes this project pop in the best of ways.
With topics of loyalty, life, women, and family, Boosie relates to listeners in ways that reminds fans of his earlier music. Teaming up with Zay really brought the best out of Boosie for this project.
With a world of momentum, Zaytoven doesn’t have plans of letting up! Being a respected veteran in the industry only has him hungrier and more grounded than ever! Stay updated on Zaytoven via his social media pages and follow his journey, more glorious things are too come from the super producer.
