The Rapfest And HipHopDX Teamed Up For This Sick Cipher

As we fully embrace the New Year, The Rapfest kicks things off with the 5th installment of their cipher series in collaboration with HipHopDX. The tried and true formula of meshing Hip-Hop’s established stars and veterans, along with talented newcomers, while highlighting the producers, has been paying dividends. The Rapfest and HipHopDX have joined forces for a collaborative effort to bring you a four-part cipher series. For this edition, The Rapfest recruits critically acclaimed artist/producer Chase N Cashe; a member of the legendary Wu-Tang Clan, Cappadonna; as well as Los Angeles based newcomer Azad Right as the Up Next artist. The producer of this series is also a newcomer from the Rapfest membership by the name Ryan “Ryu” Alexy, who provides the very soulful backdrop for this edition. As usual, the masterful eyes of Chris Zino from Exhibition Z Films captured the visuals.

For each cipher, out of dozens of submissions, the questions we receive are always; why this specific beat and why those particular artists? The beat is the perfect arrangement that allows each artist to be more impressive than your average boom bap track with cinematic strings underneath a hypnotic baseline. Ryu describes the musical influence in North Carolina as “a little bit of everything, a balance of Northern and Southern swag meeting and pushing the genre…” The production is exceptional and each artist on the track delivers with every line from beginning to end.

This cipher is reminiscent of the way music was made in the classic essence but it also takes us a step forward in the culture. The key element for Series 5 is the blending of the NOLA Wave God, a Shaolin native, and an emerging Middle Eastern Hip-Hop artist on one nostalgic beat without compromising anyone’s talent. Possibly one of the best cipher series to date, as far as diversity, with Cappadanno glibly delivering hard hitting lines like, “Flu shots are free but love never given…” on this gritty beat. Stay tuned for part two of the four-part cipher series between The Rapfest and HipHopDX due to release Feb 24th, 2015.

The RapFest – a membership- based digital platform that is designed to bridge the gap between new artists, producers, and today’s top-tier Hip Hop talent by incorporating ciphers, networking tools, and marketing campaigns. On RapFest, each cipher makes up an episode using some of the industries biggest names and underground legends in Hip-Hop. One beat, three artists, each giving it their all. Every artist’s cipher is shot individually, in HD, and packaged together, giving those yet to be discovered an opportunity to be paired alongside some of the best doing it. Although each will be rapping on the same beat, no two ciphers will be alike.
