Even though the influencers and public personalities of the hip-hop realm have been celebrating Virgil Abloh’s first ever collection as the head of Louis Vuitton’s menswear department, that hasn’t stopped him from his duties as head designer of his very own OFF-WHITE imprint. Abloh found his inspiration for his 2019 Spring/Summer compilation from a rather eccentric source in the classic American rebel. With that said, we introduce to you, the OFF-WHITE SS19 “JIM STARK” Collection.

For those of you who might be unaware, Jim Stark is a character played by James Dean in the classic 1955 film, Rebel Without A Cause.  Dean’s character single-handedly changed the aesthetic of the average American teenager and inspired the entire generation’s wardrobe consisting of white t-shirts, worker denim jeans, red Harrington jacket, and boots. Stark embodied badass throughout the film as he smoked, drank, and eventually died tragically young in the film.

With this being the inspiration for Abloh’s latest collection,  the curated product resulted in oversized “Everything In Quotes” white t-shirts, some of which features another classic American rebel in Bart Simpson. Oversized denim jeans and tops are also a common theme found throughout the collection while embellished rebel-esque accessories complete some of the looks seen on the runway.

Virgil wasn’t solely inspired by James Dean’s classic bad boy character for his OFF-WHITE SS19 “JIM STARK” Collection, he also was inspired by the notorious New York graffiti artist, Dondi White, whose most notable artistic work entitled ‘Children of the Grave’ is stretched across three subway cars. Unfortunately, White lost his life due to an AIDS-related ailment in 1998.

Elongated three-quarter jackets dressed in wide peak lapels and t-shirts featuring a multitude of different style graffiti fonts as a nod to the legendary street artist, Dondi while blurred realistic camouflage workwear is sprinkled throughout the collection.

In regards to the footwear of the OFF-WHITE SS19 “JIM STARK” Collection, never-before-seen OFF-WHITE lifestyle/runner silhouettes are revealed while some sneakers from the OFF-WHITE x Nike “The Ten” Collection are present as well as Doc Marten’s dressed in OFF-WHITE accessories including the notorious red zip ties and shoelaces.

Overall, the OFF-WHITE SS19 “JIM STARK” Collection features a wide array of distressed and embroidered denim, head-turning color palettes used for both graphic tees and pants, heavy metallic accessories including the RIMOWA x OFF-WHITE suitcase that doubled as a backpack, classic black and yellow safety tape detailing, and practical footwear for your everyday needs.

Is this American rebel inspired collection, a good look for the blossoming fusion of streetwear and high-fashion? Let us know in the comments.
