Well we’re back with our Respect The Come Up Series, this time around we will also be highlighting some up and coming singers and songwriters who deserve some praise along with rappers. In the past, we have covered 6lack, 070 Shake, Levi Carter, 24Hrs, Ugly God, Nav, G Perico and more; and they’re liking and fanbase continues to grow as we go further and further into the year. With all the great songwriters that are behind some of your favorite records though, sometimes people forget and tend to get it twisted as most of these writers are aiming to become bigger then their pen.
Forgetting that it if it weren’t for the singers and songwriters who originally set the tone for Hip Hop to even get its start all those years ago, we must add them to the growing list of artists worthy of a Respect the Come Up.
And kicking off this quarters series, check out the few artists below whom have been on our radar for quite some time now. As we’ve seen them blossom, their grind only continues to push them forward, lining them up for major spotlight.
J.I.D – Hails from East Atlanta, also the home of Gucci Mane, Future, Young Scooter and more, but while sharing the same zip code the young emcee is on a path of his own. When most people think of Southern artists, especially with the new crop most likely assumed to be making some form of Trap Music. Well that is not the case with JID.
The young spitter can rap his f***ing ass off, can change his flow constantly, and has the ability to rap on any beat, along with thought-provoking content, he’s showing that there is more to Atlanta than trap music. He has been compared to Kendrick and I can see why, just check his recent freestyles on Shade 45. Since releasing his DiCaprio EP in 2015 he has been making waves in Atlanta along with the Spillage Village collective which is made up of EarthGang, Jordxn Bryant, and Hollywood JB. Recently JID inked a deal with J. Cole’s Dreamville records and since signing, he hasn’t wasted any time and dropped his debut album The Never Story soon after. The album is a great first impression to the world and proves he is a gifted lyricist and if you appreciate lyricism, metaphors, punchlines and style you won’t want to miss out on him as this is just the beginning.
Tee Grizzley – The Detroit rapper’s career has just began, but he is already making a huge impact. After spending about two and a half years in jail for robbery and home invasion, the 22 year old hit the ground running upon his release. As soon as he was free, he went to the studio and recorded his first single “First Day Out.” The single would go on to garner over 27 million views on Youtube and has been compared to Meek Mill’s ‘Dreams and Nightmares’ intro. Earning him a deal with 300 Entertainment, Tee Grizzley released his debut project My Moment which was written while he was in jail earlier this month. The tape shows off Tee’s versatility and his ability to craft songs. The project isn’t without its flaws but it shows that Tee Grizzley can be the next big star out of Detroit.
Bibi Bourelly – You may not be familiar with her face or name yet, but you’re probably already familiar with some of her work as she is poised to be a household name if not the next pop star to blow up. The German-born D.C native is known for her pen game and is quickly making a name for artistry as well. She co-wrote 4 songs on Rihanna’s Anti album which includes “Yeah I Said It,” “Pose,” “Higher” and hit single “Bitch Better Have My Money;” along with that she also helped write “Need You” and “Hard Love II”, appeared on “Chains” alongside Nas on Usher’s latest album. And all of this within the last two years, she is preparing for her own debut.
Last year the Def Jam signee made her TV debut on Jimmy Falon’s tonight show, released her debut EP Free The Real (Pt. #1) in May, and quickly followed it up with Pt 2 in November. With her debut album slated to drop later this year, the Bibi is anticipated to become the next big name in music, so get familiar and catch her opening for Lil Uzi Vert on his “Do What I Want Tour.”
Paris Jones – Aka PJ is a singer/songwriter from North Carolina. You may have never heard her name before but she is not new to the game. In 2014 she signed to Atlantic Records and began writing for some major stars in both R&B and Rap. Some of those artists include Wiz Khalifa, Chris Brown, R.Kelly, Usher, Akon, B.o.B. and more. After solidifying her pen game, PJ released her debut EP Walking Around Pools in 2015 which was an introduction that found her stepping out from behind the scenes and jumping behind the mic. Just last year, she released her debut album RARE which featured Ty Dolla $ign and G-Eazy. With so much talent on the tip of her pen, PJ is bound to make some noise this year as well.
Starrah– Had the biggest impact on the game and you wouldn’t even know it. The songwriter/singer and rapper who hails from Delaware is the music games best-kept secret. She goes by Starrah but if your looking at the credits, lookout for the name “Brittany Hazzard”, a name you will find on some of your favorite records. In 2015 she was featured on Jeremih’s “Pass Dat” and since then has gone to write some major hits. In 2016 she lent her pen to Kevin Gates and helped to write “2 Phones” which broke Kevin Gates into the mainstream and has earned 2 platinum plaques. She also wrote the chorus for Travi$ Scott & Young Thugs “Pick Up The Phone” along with that, Drake’s “Fake Love,” Rihanna’s “Needed Me,” The Weeknd’s “True Colors,” Big Sean’s “Jump Out The Window”, the list goes on. As you can see Starrah has been everywhere and that’s just some of her accolades to speak of. If she continues on thiss course, she’s bound to take over 2017.
The year just started, but make sure you keep your eyes and ears open for these upcoming acts and remember just because there not featured on the song doesn’t mean they didn’t contribute to your favorite jam. Get familiar with them and check out our playlist below.
