For your Monday listening and viewing pleasures, we want to shout out New Jersey singer Sonyae Elise, who’s actually a pretty good rapper if she wanted to be, giving so much Black Power in the visual for her track “RUN UP” off her Apeshit project. And last I checked, it’s still Black History Month, so what better then a video like this.
In an interview with the FADER, Sonya revealed, “Being a black women in America right now, with this crazy election and then the Women’s March, ‘RUN UP’ was the perfect muse to illuminate the state of emergency we exist in. This is my creative contribution to the history of the black people.”
Inspired by 2Pac’s godmother Assata Shakur who broke out of an American prison, escaping to Cuba, she was the first woman to be on the FBI Most Wanted List.
