Achieving success in the entertainment industry is not easy. Those who have been on the journey will tell you that it takes a lot of hard work and dedication to succeed. One of the most iconic people in the industry is LL Cool J.  He is a well known hip-hop recording artist, musician, record producer, author, entrepreneur, rapper and actor.  With all these labels to him, it is clear to see that he has had his fair share of success.

So what can we learn from this husband, father, and entertainer extraordinaire about breaking the barriers and being a success in the entertainment industry?

Give 150% dedication to all you do

Forget about 100%. You need to go over and above to deliver. Success is not like having a mobile tracker free app where you type in what you want, and it happens. Achieving success requires that you are willing to work extra hard. Remember, there’s always someone waiting in the wings for that opportunity and if you do not step up, you will lose.

Have a passion

The likelihood of achieving success in a field you are not very interested in is low. Be very passionate about what you are doing, whether it is rapping, singing, acting or even writing poetry.

If you do not love what you do, you will not apply yourself to the maximum ; how then would you hope to achieve success?

Rid yourself of self-imposed limitations

There is no limit to what you can do as an individual.  Most people fail because they have set certain limitations for themselves. If you believe you can achieve something, you will go out of your way to make sure that you do it.

Some of the limitations may come from childhood experiences. If you grew up always hearing that you are not good enough, it might have an impact on you as an adult. Take a step back and refocus. Look for something you can do and do it well.

Do not be in a hurry

Success does not come overnight.  There is no shortcut to it, and being impatient will not help your course. Since it can be difficult, especially for the younger people who live in a world of instant gratification, with success you need to be patient.

Continue to keep it fresh

Think about your career like a marriage. One of the things marriage counselors tell new couples is, to keep things fresh. This is the same thing you need to apply with your entertainment career. Be versatile, be willing to learn new things and most of all, do not get comfortable.

Take care of yourself

You cannot become a success if your personal life is in shambles. You need to get your mind right, your body right, your finances right, your personal relationships right, amongst others.

When you gain clarity on what is important within yourself, you can genuinely extend yourself outside and in your career.
